David Penrod is a seasoned general practitioner, who is as comfortable with a jury in the courtroom as he is with documents at his desk.

David has broad litigation and appellate experience. He has tried hundreds of cases ranging from simple disputes in state court to complex litigation in federal court. He has extensive experience in disputes involving contracts, real estate and divorce. He has been a Commissioner in Chancery since 1985.

David has represented many clients in cases before the Virginia Court of Appeals, the Virginia Supreme Court, and the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

David’s transaction practice focuses on assisting individuals and small businesses. He handles residential and commercial real estate transactions, trusts and estate planning and administration, personal injury claims, domestic relations disputes, and he advises corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships. He is a concise draftsman. He frequently uses alternative dispute resolution to help clients solve difficult legal problems.

Admitted to practice in Ohio and Virginia; Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Bar Association, (Past President), Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. David has been selected as a Fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation. He is regularly listed in Best Lawyers in America and among Virginia’s “Legal Elite” by Virginia Business Magazine. David recently served for six years on a Professional Disciplinary Committee for the Virginia State Bar. Martindale Hubbell “AV” rated.

David has more than 25 years experience teaching law courses at Bridgewater College, James Madison University and the law school at Washington & Lee University. From 1998 to 2002 he was on the Ethics and Professionalism faculty of the Virginia State Bar. He has lectured at numerous continuing legal education seminars for the State Bar and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. David has co-authored legal books and articles for private publishers and legal associations.

Personal Information

David is married and has six children. He is an active member and trustee of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. He has served on the board of directors for the United Way and several other charitable organizations. David is an avid traveler, with a goal of hiking, backpacking or camping in all of the National Parks.
